How many scales are there? Well, there’s a lot. (Check our “Resources Tab” for more)

Most students can benefit in knowing that most of what they listen to is played in one of 5 scales. If you can understand and play comfortably in each of these scales, then you’re well on your way to becoming a good lead player.

Most professional guitarists hold steadfast to just a few scales or some combination of them. So it’s best to concentrate on the 5 scales listed below. These scales will allow you pull off the best lines from your favorite guitarist, but also create a base from which you can fully express yourself.

The 5 scales most often used are;

Major Scale

Major Pentatonic

Natural Minor

Minor Pentatonic

Blues Scale (Minor Pentatonic plus an added note)

For examples, please visit my “Resources tab”.
